16 Cute Winter Skirt Outfits to Melt the Ice With Your Hotness

A skirt in January is only cold when the tights are wrong.

The number on the packet, the denier, decides almost everything. Forty is a light layer. Eighty and up is winter.

The second thing is the gap between your hem and your boot.

Close that gap and a skirt can be warmer than thin trousers. The sixteen outfits below are sorted by where you are going, and they lean on what the fall 2026 runways showed: pencil skirts at Miu Miu and Chanel, suede at Tom Ford, brocade at Balmain and Saint Laurent. Two to start with are the camel wool pencil skirt with a turtleneck and the melton midi built for actual snow. If you want more cold-weather looks under $100, our affordable winter outfits pick up from here, and the knee-high boot outfit ideas go deeper on the boots.

Tights, layers, and the hem rule

Get these three things right and almost any skirt below works in winter.

TightsWhat it looks likeWhen to wear it
40 denierSemi-opaque, a little skin showsCool days, heated offices, evening
60 denierFully opaqueMost of the winter for a short commute
80 to 100 denierDense and matteFull winter, long walks, outdoor waits
Fleece-linedOpaque outside, plush insideBelow about 40°F, wind, or snow

The table only works with the right skirt fabric. Wool, melton, tweed, corduroy, leather, suede, velvet, and heavy knits hold warmth. Satin, rayon, and thin polyester do not, so save those for nights with a short walk from the car. For a long cold walk, a pair of silk long johns under the tights adds warmth without the overheating you get from a thick thermal layer indoors.

Then mind the gap. A midi hem should graze or cover the top of your boot, which gives one long line and no cold strip of leg. If you would rather show skin, show at least four inches between hem and boot so it looks deliberate. Most of the outfits below follow one of those two settings.

Work (1 to 5)

The fall 2026 shows were full of skirts for the office, from pencil skirts at Miu Miu, Mugler, and Chanel to skirt suits at Chanel, Jil Sander, and Ferragamo.

1. Camel wool pencil skirt and a turtleneck

A camel wool pencil midi skirt with a tucked fine cream turtleneck, a long camel coat, black opaque tights, and black slingback kitten heels

A camel wool pencil skirt to mid-calf, a fine turtleneck tucked in, and a long coat in the same family of color. Beige pencil skirts in this Bessette Kennedy spirit were all over Milan for fall 2026, including at Gucci. The tonal coat keeps the line long. With 60 denier tights and slingbacks, this one suits a short commute rather than a long walk.

2. Jewel-tone skirt suit

A deep purple collarless skirt suit with a cream shell top, black 80 denier tights, and black pointed loafers

A skirt suit in a deep color, purple, emerald, or oxblood, over a plain shell. Jil Sander showed its suits in purple and without lapels, which makes the jacket read cleaner. Black 80 denier tights and pointed loafers keep it warm enough to wear all day. Buy the jacket to fit your shoulders, since that is the part a tailor cannot fix.

3. Tweed midi and a shirt under a sweater

A grey tweed A-line midi skirt with a white poplin shirt collar showing under a navy V-neck sweater, brown knee-high boots, and a camel trench

A grey tweed A-line midi, a poplin shirt with a V-neck sweater over it, and knee boots that disappear under the hem. This is the warmest office outfit on this list, because the tweed and the boots overlap and there is no gap at all. Unlined tweed can itch, so check the inside of the skirt before you buy, or wear a slip underneath. Our fall old money outfits show more tweed and knit pairings.

4. Drop-waist pleated midi and a buttoned cardigan

A navy drop-waist pleated midi skirt with a fitted navy cardigan buttoned to the top, 60 denier black tights, and black Mary Jane pumps

Drop-waist skirts, where the pleats start at the hip rather than the waist, came back at Chanel, Tory Burch, and Marni for fall 2026. With a fitted cardigan buttoned all the way and Mary Jane pumps, it looks current without trying hard. The low seam suits a straighter body best. If your waist is the narrowest part of you, a pleated skirt from the natural waist does more.

5. Brown suede midi and a knit polo

A chocolate brown suede A-line midi skirt with an ivory knit polo, chocolate knee-high boots, and a belted camel wool wrap coat

Tom Ford showed suede skirt suits for fall 2026, and a suede midi on its own is the easier way in. An ivory knit polo and boots in the same brown make it tonal. Suede is the downside here. It marks in rain and snow, so spray it with a suede protector before the first wear, and keep it for dry days. Our brown leather jacket skirt outfits show other brown-on-brown pairings.

Weekend (6 to 10)

6. Oatmeal knit skirt set

An oatmeal ribbed knit midi skirt and matching sweater set with shearling-lined clogs and grey ribbed socks

A matching knit skirt and sweater is the warmest weekend option and the least effort. Knit skirts showed up at Gucci, Valentino, and Kallmeyer for fall 2026. Shearling-lined clogs with socks over your tights finish it. Knit skirts can seat out, meaning the back stretches into a bump after a few hours of sitting, so a fine, dense rib holds its shape better than a loose knit.

7. Black leather maxi and a striped shirt

A black leather maxi skirt with an oversized blue striped button-down shirt, a grey crewneck sweater over the shoulders, and black chunky loafers

A leather maxi skirt with an oversized striped shirt is the weekend outfit with the most contrast between pieces, stiff leather against soft cotton. A sweater over the shoulders handles the temperature change between outside and inside. A leather skirt needs conditioning every few months, or it dries and cracks, and it should hang on a wide padded hanger.

8. Corduroy midi and a Fair Isle sweater

A tan corduroy button-front midi skirt with a cream and brown Fair Isle sweater, a waxed olive jacket, and brown lug-sole Chelsea boots

A button-front corduroy midi, a patterned Fair Isle sweater, a waxed jacket, and lug-sole Chelsea boots. This is the outfit for a farmers market or a walk somewhere muddy. Cord is warm, it does not wrinkle much, and the lug sole grips wet pavement. Leave the bottom button or two undone so you can walk freely.

9. Plaid mini, turtleneck, and knee boots

A red and navy plaid wool mini skirt with a black turtleneck, a cropped black bomber, 100 denier black tights, and black knee-high boots

A plaid wool mini with a black turtleneck, a cropped bomber, and 100 denier tights under knee boots. The boots and the dense tights do the warmth work, so the short skirt is fine even on a cold day. Plaid is a classic rather than a fall 2026 runway trend. Burberry's fall 2026 tartan was on coats, not skirts. It still works because black ties all the colors together.

10. Denim maxi and a cable cardigan

A dark indigo denim maxi skirt with a cream cable-knit cardigan, a quilted navy vest, and grey suede sneakers

A dark denim maxi with a cable cardigan and a quilted vest is the most casual skirt outfit here. The maxi length means you can wear thermal leggings underneath and nobody will know. Sneakers are fine on a dry day. On a wet one, swap them for a Chelsea boot, since the denim hem soaks up slush.

Evening and holiday (11 to 14)

Brocade at Balmain, Saint Laurent, Chanel, and Dries Van Noten, and lace at Saint Laurent, gave fall 2026 a lot of dressier skirts.

11. Brocade midi and a fine turtleneck

A gold and black brocade A-line midi skirt with a black fine-knit turtleneck, black opaque tights, and black pointed pumps

A brocade skirt with a plain black knit is the holiday party outfit that is also warm. Brocade is a heavy woven fabric, so it holds its shape and keeps out drafts better than satin. Keep everything else black so the pattern is the only detail. Our Christmas party outfits include more brocade and velvet.

12. Black lace midi and a boxy jacket

A black lace midi skirt over a slip, a cropped boxy black tweed jacket, 40 denier black tights, and black strappy heels

A lace midi with a slip underneath, a cropped jacket, and 40 denier tights. The slip matters for two reasons: it stops the lace from looking unfinished, and it keeps the skirt from clinging to your tights. This is an indoor outfit. Strappy heels and lace are not built for a long walk in the cold.

13. Velvet bias midi and a faux fur coat

A burgundy velvet bias-cut midi skirt with a black silk camisole, a chocolate faux fur coat, and black satin ankle boots

A bias-cut velvet skirt moves when you walk, and velvet is warmer than satin in the same shape. Fur coats at Gucci, Chanel, and Valentino made the faux version an easy match for fall 2026. Wine-red is the color to choose if you want one festive shade, and our burgundy outfits show how far it goes.

14. Satin skirt and an oversized cardigan

A champagne satin midi skirt with an oversized grey boyfriend cardigan, a white tee, and silver slingback heels

A satin skirt with a slouchy cardigan is the low-effort party look: one dressy piece, one cozy one. Satin is the least warm fabric on this list and it creases when you sit, so steam it rather than iron it, and wear it where the walk is short. Our satin skirt outfits have warmer winter versions with boots and knits.

Snow days (15 to 16)

15. Melton midi with fleece-lined tights

A charcoal melton wool midi skirt with a grey turtleneck, a long black down coat, fleece-lined black tights, and black waterproof lace-up lug boots

This is the outfit for actual snow. Melton is a dense, felted wool that blocks wind. Put a thermal top under the turtleneck, fleece-lined tights on your legs, and a long down coat that reaches past the hem. Waterproof lace-up boots with a deep lug sole grip ice better than any fashion boot. The midi should stop above the boot laces so the hem does not drag in slush.

16. Knit maxi over silk long johns

A grey ribbed knit maxi skirt with a cream turtleneck, a shearling aviator jacket, and insulated tall black snow boots

A knit maxi worn over silk long johns, with insulated tall snow boots underneath. Nobody can see the base layer, and the long skirt traps warm air around your legs the way a coat does. Silk base layers are warm and thin, but they need hand washing and dry slowly, so buy two pairs. Our Canadian outfit ideas have more layering for deep cold.

What we would skip

  • A midi that stops two inches above the boot. It is the coldest setting there is: a strip of bare leg, and a break in the line.
  • Fleece-lined tights under a fitted pencil skirt. The bulk shows through the skirt.
  • Long slip shorts under a slip. They push the slip up into a roll around your knees.
  • Unlined wool next to bare skin if wool makes you itch. A slip or a silk layer fixes it.
  • Suede and satin on a snowy commute.

When the weather turns, most of these skirts carry into spring with lighter tights and loafers, and our skirt and shoe pairings cover each shape. For the summer side of the same skirts, see how to style a maxi skirt for summer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you wear a skirt in winter without freezing?

Start with the tights: 80 denier or higher for full winter, or fleece-lined tights below about 40°F. Choose a skirt in wool, tweed, corduroy, leather, suede, or a heavy knit, and add a thin thermal layer such as silk long johns under the tights for long walks. Then close the gap between your hem and your boots, either with a midi that covers the boot top or with knee boots under a shorter skirt.

What denier tights are warmest?

Higher denier means thicker yarn and more warmth. 40 denier is semi-opaque and suits cool days, 60 is fully opaque, 80 is noticeably warmer, and 100 is the warmest in the standard range. Fleece-lined tights are warmer than any standard denier and are worth it below about 40°F or in wind, though they add bulk under a fitted pencil skirt.

What skirt length is best for winter?

A midi that reaches past the top of your boots is the warmest, because it leaves no bare strip of leg. Minis work with knee-high boots and opaque tights. The length that causes trouble is a midi that stops an inch or two above the boot, which leaves a cold gap and breaks the leg line.

How do you stop a skirt sticking to tights?

Static builds most between polyester or nylon skirts and nylon tights. Wear a slip or a lined skirt, spray an anti-static product like StaticGuard on the inside of the skirt, or rub a dryer sheet inside it. Lotion on your legs before the tights also helps. Wool and cotton skirts build less static than synthetics.

What shoes go with skirts in winter?

Knee-high boots are the most useful, since they cover the leg and work with minis and midis. Lug-sole Chelsea boots or lace-up boots suit weekend skirts and icy pavements. For the office, pointed flats, loafers, or slingbacks work with opaque tights if your commute is short. Keep satin and suede shoes for dry days.
