13 Hockey Game Outfits That Keep You Warm by the Glass

13 Hockey Game Outfits That Keep You Warm by the Glass

A hockey arena is colder than a football stadium in October, and you sit still for three hours.

The seating bowl usually runs somewhere around 60 to 65°F, and the rows by the glass feel colder.

So layer like it is a cool fall evening, even in April.

The other thing to check is the bag rule, because some arenas are strict. TD Garden in Boston only allows bags up to 4 by 6 inches. Below are thirteen outfits for every kind of game, from a jersey over a fitted base layer for a regular-season night to a full outdoor layering system for the Winter Classic in Salt Lake City. For football tailgates and stadium bag rules, our game day outfits go further, and the basketball game outfits cover the warmer arena next door.

Cold seats, bag rules, and jerseys

The NHL's 2026-27 season opened on September 29, the first 84-game season in more than thirty years, and the regular season runs to April 10, 2027. That is a lot of cold evenings in an arena.

Bag rules vary a lot between arenas. Two examples:

ArenaBag rule
TD Garden, BostonBags up to 4 x 6 x 1.5 in only. No backpacks, except medical and diaper bags.
Madison Square Garden, New YorkBags up to 22 x 14 x 9 in that fit under the seat. No bag or coat check.

Check your arena's page before you go. A belt bag or a small crossbody gets into almost every arena, and with no coat check at many venues, your jacket stays on your lap.

If you are buying a jersey, these were the Fanatics tiers and prices at their 2024 launch. Current prices vary by team and player.

JerseyPrice at launch (USD)What it is
Practice$120Retail version of the practice jersey
Breakaway$135 to $175Replica with a heat-pressed crest, in men's and women's cuts
Premium$180 to $230Lighter fit with sewn graphics
Authentic Pro$425Made in Canada, the same as on the ice

Women's jerseys run XS to XL. For a roomier fit or an extended size, buy men's or unisex, and our women's size chart helps you convert.

Regular season (1 to 4)

1. Jersey over a fitted base layer

A navy and white hockey jersey worn over a fitted black long-sleeve top with straight dark jeans and black combat boots

A jersey over a fitted long-sleeve top, straight jeans, and combat boots. The base layer stops the jersey's mesh from letting the cold through, and combat boots handle the walk in from the parking lot. Choose a synthetic or merino base layer, not cotton, since cotton stays damp and cold if you get warm on the walk in.

2. Team hoodie, puffer vest, and leggings

A red team hoodie under a black puffer vest with black fleece-lined leggings and white sneakers

A team hoodie under a puffer vest with fleece-lined leggings and sneakers. The vest keeps your core warm and leaves your arms free to cheer. Regular leggings are cold in the lower bowl, which is why fleece-lined ones are worth it here. Our hoodie outfits have more ways to wear a team sweatshirt.

3. Turtleneck in team colors and a puffer

A black turtleneck with a short gold puffer jacket, dark straight jeans, and black ankle boots

No jersey? A turtleneck and a puffer in your team's colors say the same thing. It also works if you are a guest of a fan and do not want to commit. At an arena with no coat check, the puffer spends the game on your lap, so a short one is easier to manage.

4. Fleece quarter-zip and wide-leg jeans

A cream fleece quarter-zip over a navy mock neck top with wide-leg mid-blue jeans and brown boots

A fleece quarter-zip over a mock neck with wide-leg jeans. Fleece is warmer than a sweatshirt for its weight, and the zip lets you cool down when the arena fills up. Wide jeans do let a draft up your legs, so this suits seats higher up rather than by the glass.

Date night at the game (5 to 7)

5. Jersey and a leather bomber

A white and blue hockey jersey under a black leather bomber jacket with black faux leather trousers and black block-heel ankle boots

A jersey under a leather bomber with leather trousers and block-heel boots. The bomber makes the jersey look like a choice rather than a uniform. Arena stairs are steep and often sticky, so keep the heel low and wide. Our leather pants outfits have more date looks.

6. Midi skirt, thick tights, and knee boots

A black pleated midi skirt with 80 denier black tights, black knee-high boots, and a red crewneck sweater in team colors

A midi skirt, 80 denier tights, knee boots, and a sweater in team colors. It is the dressiest outfit here, and still warm, because the boots and tights cover the whole leg. Our winter skirt outfits explain the tights denier.

7. Bodysuit, varsity jacket, and a tiny bag

A black long-sleeve bodysuit with a navy and white varsity jacket, straight dark jeans, black boots, and a small black clutch

A bodysuit with a varsity jacket and straight jeans, plus a clutch small enough for TD Garden's 4 by 6 inch rule. The bodysuit stays tucked through three periods. For more dinner-and-game ideas, see our winter date night outfits.

Playoffs (8 and 9)

Playoffs run from April into June, and the arena is still cold inside, so do not dress for the weather outside.

8. Rally layers: tee under the jersey

A white team t-shirt layered under a white home hockey jersey with light straight jeans and white sneakers

A team tee under the jersey, jeans, and white sneakers, for a white-out night. White is the riskiest color in a packed, beer-heavy playoff crowd. Treat a spill as soon as you get home, before it sets.

9. Jersey, biker shorts, and crew socks

An oversized red hockey jersey with black biker shorts, white crew socks, and white chunky sneakers

An oversized jersey with biker shorts and crew socks, for a June game when it is hot outside. Inside, the bowl is still in the 60s, so bring a sweatshirt to tie around your waist.

Outdoor games (10 and 11)

The 2027 Winter Classic is on December 31, 2026, at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, between the Utah Mammoth and the Colorado Avalanche. Salt Lake City in December averages a high around 34°F and a low around 19°F, and part of the game is played after dark.

10. The full outdoor layering system

A hockey jersey worn over a long black down parka with a grey fleece and thermal base underneath, black insulated snow boots, mittens, and a knit beanie

A thermal base, a fleece, a down parka, the jersey over the top, insulated boots, mittens, and hand warmers in your pockets. Size the jersey up so it fits over the parka. You will be outside for hours, standing in security lines and then sitting in a stadium, and the cold comes up from the concrete through your feet first.

11. Snow pants and a balaclava

Black insulated snow bib pants with a team hockey jersey over a puffer jacket, a black knit balaclava, and black snow boots

Snow pants or a ski bib under the jersey, with a balaclava or a scarf over your face. It looks extreme in an arena and exactly right in a stadium on New Year's Eve. Our Canadian outfit ideas have more deep-cold layering.

The youth rink (12 and 13)

Community rinks for youth hockey are often colder than NHL arenas, with metal bleachers and early-morning ice times.

12. Long puffer, fleece-lined leggings, and a blanket

A long black puffer coat with fleece-lined black leggings, black snow boots, a grey beanie, and a plaid stadium blanket

A long puffer that covers you to the knee, fleece-lined leggings, snow boots, and a blanket for the bleachers. This is not glamorous, and nobody at a 6am practice cares. The floor near the rink door is often wet, so waterproof boots matter more than style.

13. Teddy fleece and thermal joggers

A cream teddy fleece jacket with grey thermal joggers, brown lined boots, and a cream knit hat

A teddy fleece, thermal joggers, lined boots, and a warm hat. It is the outfit for parents doing the weekend tournament circuit, comfortable in the car and warm in the rink. Our sweatpants outfits show how to keep joggers looking put together.

What we would skip

  • A big bag at a strict arena. TD Garden turns away anything over 4 x 6 inches.
  • Stilettos on steep, sticky arena stairs.
  • A white jersey with nothing under it at a crowded playoff game.
  • Cotton as your base layer for an outdoor game.
  • Spring clothes for a spring playoff game. The arena is still cold.

If you are heading to a country show at an arena this winter, the same small-bag habits apply, and our country concert outfits cover arena layering too. For more ways to wear dark denim to a game, see our black jeans outfits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear to a hockey game?

Layers. Arena seating usually sits somewhere around 60 to 65°F, colder by the glass, and you are sitting for about three hours. A fitted long-sleeve base, a jersey or team sweatshirt, jeans, and warm boots work for most games, with a jacket you can keep on your lap. Check the arena's bag policy, since some only allow very small bags.

How cold is it at a hockey game?

The seating area of an NHL arena is usually somewhere around 60 to 65°F, according to fan and arena guides, while the ice itself is kept below freezing. Seats close to the glass feel colder, and community rinks for youth hockey are often colder still. Bring a layer even for spring playoff games.

How should a woman wear a hockey jersey?

Over a fitted long-sleeve top or a hoodie, with jeans, leggings, or a skirt and thick tights. Hockey jerseys are cut big, so many women wear one as an oversized layer. Women's jerseys from Fanatics run XS to XL, so for a roomier fit or extended sizes, a men's or unisex size is the usual workaround.

How much does an NHL jersey cost?

At their 2024 launch, Fanatics NHL jerseys were priced from about $120 USD for the practice jersey and $135 to $175 for the Breakaway replica, up to about $425 for the Authentic Pro version made in Canada. Prices vary by team and player, so check current listings.

What should I wear to the NHL Winter Classic?

Dress for a long evening outdoors in winter. The 2027 Winter Classic is in Salt Lake City on December 31, 2026, where December averages a high around 34°F and a low around 19°F. Wear a thermal base layer, a fleece, a down parka with the jersey over it or under it, insulated boots, mittens, and hand warmers.
